inside: this potato soup is a family favorite whenever it is cold. We love the little zing of flavor it has as well.

I love soup! And I love this zesty potato soup recipe! In the winter months I make it a lot. My husband is also a huge soup fan.. the kids… not.so.much. But that doesn’t stop me from making lots of soup and I’m always looking for new recipes. A few years ago I found this recipe when I was looking for holiday party recipes. I wanted to make a big batch of soup to serve at my husbands’ staff dinner. It turned out great and I’ve made it several times since then. When I was thinking of a recipe that used Tabasco, this popped into my mind. Tabasco is what makes this potato soup so zesty, and different from my other potato soup recipes.

Did you know Tabasco comes in several flavors? I’m most familiar with the original, but when I was picking mine up for the recipe I saw that it also comes inJalapeño, and Chipotle flavored sauces… makes me want to try those too!

I love to serve bread with my soup. For this meal I made easy biscuits from a mix, but I also love my easy homemade bread recipe….. and mywhole wheat bread sticks recipe.

I think the toppings are what make a soup really amazing, you know? They give great texture and more flavor to this already tasty soup. You can also personalize the flavor of the soup by adding more bacon or whatever you really like.

It sounds delicious but way too fattening! I’m going to try to substitute a few things and see how it turns out. Never would have thought of tabasco

This looks really good! I don’t like the taste of Tabasco so I’m going to try to substitute Frank’s Hot Sauce (which I love the taste of!). I hope it turns out!

This soup was delicious, I was skimpy with the tabasco and I also added 1/2 cup diced onion. The was for night one .Still had a lot of “lumpy” but yummy soup left. Day two, I heated the soup and I cooked a bag of Broccoli In the micro for about 5 minutes In a micro safe covered dish. Put a batch of zesty soup in the blender to smooth it out a little then added a cup of cooked broccoli with a little broccoli water and pureed it. Poured the soup into bowls, added the cheese a few flowerettes, and bacon bits…into the micro until the cheese is melted. Beautiful presentation and very tasty potato, broccoli bisque. I think for day three I will freeze the rest, hope it freezes well.

How do you dress up canned soup? ›

Go green: Add some spinach or chopped kale or pesto. Get zesty: A squirt of lemon juice or zest could brighten up an otherwise flat soup. Starchy things: Homemade croutons, crushed tortilla chips, or oyster crackers. Clean out the fridge: got cooked beans or rice, a dollop of sour cream, or a splash of heavy cream?

What is a good thickener for potato soup? ›

Add Flour Or Cornstarch

You can thicken soup by adding flour, cornstarch, or another starchy substitute. For the best results, never add flour or cornstarch directly to your soup. If you do, it will clump up on top. Instead, ladle a small amount of broth into a separate bowl and let it cool.

How do you blend potato soup without it being gummy? ›

Just err on the side of caution and use a light hand when you're blending your spuds into the broth, only mixing just until combined, and you'll end up with a silky-smooth pot of soup. You can ensure even better results by using the right kind of potato.

How do you thicken soup from a can? ›

Cornstarch is a great option as it is a natural thickening agent, but you'll want to be careful about how much you use. Start with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch whisked together with cold water to create a slurry. Then, gradually add the slurry to the soup, letting it boil for one to two minutes before adding more.

Can you cook in soup cans? ›

Canned food should not be cooked in the can, as doing so can release harmful chemicals from the can and plastic lining into the food. Cans made of tin, aluminum, steel, and other metals can release toxins such as chromium and nickel when heated.

Can I add cream to soup while cooking? ›

You need to be careful even with the cream. If you started the soup with broth, stock or water, I would wait until the end to add the cream. You can warm the cream, or “temper” it, which is what I do.

How to make can potato soup taste better? ›

ADD ACID

Fresh lemon juice: this is best to add at the end of cooking, otherwise the lemon flavor can become bitter. Cooking Vinegars: such as balsamic vinegar, red wine vinegar, or even apple cider vinegar. Hot sauce: helps to add both acid and heat, so you're getting even more bang for your buck.

How to jazz up canned potato soup? ›

Add swirls of pesto, chili crisp, hot sauce, sour cream, or salted yogurt. Garnish your bowl with fried shallots, garlic chips, croutons, or a mish-mash of toasted seeds. Douse tender, fresh herbs—like cilantro, dill, parsley, or basil—in good-quality olive oil and vinegar and pile them on top.

How to spruce up canned potato soup? ›

Add Acid. There's a reason why "acid" made it into the title of Samin Nosrat's popular cookbook-turned-Netflix-series Salt Fat Acid Heat. It's an essential component to perk up the flavors in nearly any savory recipe. Try a squeeze of lemon or lime or a splash of vinegar to brighten a dull-tasting canned soup.

What if potato soup is too gluey? ›

If you've ever tried potato leek soup and found it to have a gluey texture, it's because the potatoes released too much starch from being over handled. This is unfortunately easy to do with a food processor or blender (heck, it can even happen when making mashed potatoes, which is why I avoid using an electric mixer).

What causes gluey potatoes? ›

When too much starch gets released, the potatoes become gummy, gluey, and unappetizing. Overworking the potatoes can happen in a couple ways: either by simply handling them too much, or by using a food processor, blender, or similar tool, which mixes the potatoes too aggressively.

Why is my soup gelatinous? ›

When you simmer a fresh chicken — complete with bones, skin, and meat — you extract the collagen from the bones. This collagen in the bones is what is causing your soup to gel. It's completely natural, and it only happens in rich, well-made chicken stock. It can be a little freaky, though, if you're not expecting it!
